In Adult Burlesque for post-secondary dancers, we will approach the art of Burlesque through body isolation technique and the study of dramatic relationships.
Discussion and lecture will centre around the evolution of Burlesque in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, New York, Las Vegas, and the Middle East.
To learn control of the body, learners will study technical isolations borrowed from Jazz and Ballet by the Egyptians in the 18th century and refined through the 19th century as 'Egyptian Dance'.
Learners will be exposed to a variety of tricks, isolations and rhythms from a range of folkloric styles including:
-- Traditional Oriental
-- Saidi
-- Street Shaabi
-- Hagallah
-- Khallegi
Blended with this learning will be notes on how traditional musical theatre technique is adapted for adult shows like burlesque and drag.
Musical theatre and jazz techniques will be revisited with a twist.
Learners will explore their character and their relationships through exploration of the lyrics and instrumentalization of the music.
